A Coast & Country customer who was long-term unemployed is now working front of house at McDonalds, after receiving support from our Westfield Farm community resource centre.
June Douglas was referred by Redcar Job Centre to the Work Hub at Westfield Farm for support into work, where firstly she received help to improve her maths and English skills.
By attending the Hub and undertaking various short courses, including one in hospitality, June experienced a boost in her self-confidence.
June was also supported by Coast & Country with money advice to help her budget better, and make the transition from benefits into paid work.
The 55-year-old was spotted by the manager of the McDonalds Restaurant in Redcar at a ‘Talent Tea’, attended by employers looking to recruit to their teams, and organised by those who had attended the Introduction to Working in Hospitality course, and offered her an interview.
She now meets and greets customers at the restaurant in Redcar.
Emma Grimes, Employability Manager at Coast & Country, said: long-term unemployment not only has a negative impact on an individual's finances, health and long-term career prospects, but also on their self-esteem.
“This demonstrates the value of the support provided by Westfield Farm to the local community and how it is helping transform people’s lives for the better.
“We are delighted that as a result, June has found employment at one of the country’s most well-known names.
“People don’t need to be a Coast & Country customer to come and use Westfield Farm’s services. It is here for the entire community.
June said: “Without the support from Westfield Farm and Redcar Job Centre I wouldn’t have had the skills or confidence to get this job.
“I now am working full-time in a role I love as I really enjoy meeting people and working alongside a team of great workmates.
“There are agencies out there, such as the Job Centre and Westfield Farm, that can assist if you are looking for work, and I can’t recommend them highly enough.
“Anyone needing help should tap into the fantastic employment support network that is available.”
Westfield Farm provides training, meeting and conference facilities, community gardens and allotments, a community resource and training centre.
It is owned and managed by Coast & Country with the invaluable support of volunteer group, Friends of Westfield Farm.
