Empty homes

Our innovative Empty Homes project is a partnership between Coast & Country, Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council, Community Campus 87 and East Cleveland Youth Housing Trust.

The project began in the summer of 2010. Funded by the Homes & Communities Agency, the project aims to address the issue of long-term empty homes whilst providing training, volunteering and work opportunities. Everyone who participates in the project benefits from a robust package of training and development, helping them to gain meaningful employment going forward.

Bringing empty homes back into use has an incredibly positive effect on the local community. By contributing to the regeneration of areas, tackling disrepair, bringing about improvements to the street scene and alleviating concerns about semi-derelict properties and their role in attracting anti-social behaviour and crime, we aim to build stronger communities for the future.

So far 26 apprenticeship opportunities have been given, 16 people have gained full time employment, as a result of the scheme, and 108 training and volunteering places have been created.

The participants took part in a wide range of training courses including NVQ’s and we have recently recruited five Forging Futures placements.

The scheme has seen the completion of over 60 homes, working largely with ‘non-professional’ landlords, who owned one or sometimes two properties and had either had a bad experience of renting or were afraid of the rental market. The scheme has benefitted them, as by using our expertise in the rental sector, we have been able to make renting work for people.
